

Jan Broberg
Founder
Jan Broberg became a household name after the award-winning documentary based on her kidnapping in the 1970’s, Abducted in Plain Sight, was released on Netflix in 2019. Jan is an accomplished actress having appeared in over 50 films and television shows. She graduated Summa Cum Laude from Brigham Young University for her studies in Cinematic Arts and Theatre and served as the Executive Director of the Center for the Arts at Kayenta in St. George Utah from 2017 through 2022. In January 2022, Jan launched The Jan Broberg Foundation, created to highlight her mission of helping victims of abuse heal and thrive, and to prevent abuse from happening by emphasizing the insidious crime and pathology of the groomers who perpetuate these crimes. Jan serves as a producer on the NBC series, A Friend of the Family, which is based on her family’s horror story being groomed and abused by a trusted family friend. Jan is grateful to be a mother and inspired daily by her favorite and only child Austen Duke Tanner.

Austen Tanner

Austen Tanner has worked in the entertainment industry for over 15 years as a stage manager, and licensed cosmetologist. His passion for traveling brought him to Sardinia, Italy where he learned to speak Italian fluently. Aside from traveling Austen loves animals and has quite the menagerie including two dogs, a turtle and mini-pig named Bitsy. Austen is Jan Broberg’s son and has been by her side as has helped her tell her story as supporter, cheerleader and business partner from the beginning.

Alan Manwaring
Executive Director
Alan Manwaring has engaged in project based public policy and business management consulting work with a focus on building public-private partnerships and facilitating divergent groups in working toward common public policy initiatives – primarily based in Washington, DC although more recently in Salt Lake City, Utah. Alan’s primary focus has been working with groups intent on better educating emerging think tanks throughout the world on the importance of understanding the connection between national security strategy policy and economic development. While engaged in his consulting work over the years Alan has also taught economics and business as an adjunct professor at the university level.

Dave Markel
Associate Director
Dave Markel is a seasoned criminal justice, human resources, and Title IX trauma
interview/investigation professional who for the past 39-years has been dedicated to pursuing
justice for victims of crime, especially victims and survivors of interpersonal violence and violence
against women and children; Dave’s commitment to providing on-going “best-practices” approach
is uncompromising.
In May of 2022, Dave began his work with the Jan Broberg Foundation and the Jan Broberg Show
(podcast) as a trauma-informed interview consultant and as a co-host to Jan’s podcast. Dave’s
work with The Jan Broberg Foundation has been extensive in the advisory role and in moving the
Foundation forward as it works to meet its goals and mission. Dave also hosts his own podcast,
Sexual Assault Survival Stories (SASS). Based on his extensive background, experience, and
education, Dave plays a key role in effective training, consulting, and advising on neuro-based
communication and memory skills. Dave is one of the foremost experts and practitioners in
Trauma- informed Interview Principles (TiIPs)™, a trauma-informed interview and investigation and
neuro-science and trauma-memory approach for victims/survivors of emotional trauma and
interpersonal violence.
Dave’s career started in 1983 as a patrol officer of the Lafayette (CO) Police Department; he was
promoted to Investigator in 1986, during which time he helped establish several programs for
training and coordinated a multi-disciplinary response program for sexual assault, child abuse, and
domestic violence cases. He retired from the police department in 2001 and began an independent
training and consulting business. In January of 2009 Dave was hired by the US Army Criminal
Investigative Command (Criminal Investigations Division—CID) as a Highly Qualified Expert to
supervise, manage, and assist in coordinating, producing, and presenting the Army’s sexual assault
investigation training program at the Military Police School at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO. He presented
advanced sexual assault investigation training to criminal investigative agents and prosecutors
from all the U.S. military branches at military installations in the U.S., Asia, and Europe. In addition,
he co-produced and co-managed the advanced, two-week Special Victims Unit Investigation
Course (SVUIC), conducted at both Ft. Leonard Wood and at the Federal Law Enforcement Training
Center in Glynco, GA. Dave completed his HQE appointment in 2014 and currently offers traumainformed
interview training and consulting through his own business, Markel Consulting, LLC. He
holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology from the University of Arizona Global Campus.
